AS-Motor is named after its founder, Alfred Schefenacker, who set the company up in Bühlertann, southern Germany, in 1959.

A keen inventor, Alfred Schefenacker noticed how difficult it was to mow between the steep and narrow rows of vineyards outside Stuttgart and decided to build a solution based on his own two-stroke engine design. The result was the “Allmäher” - German for all-mower - a light but powerful mowing machine intended for commercial applications on extra-tough terrain.

The company's focus ever since has been primarily on machines for landscaping and ground-keeping operations, the kind of machines councils use to maintain roadsides and public parks, but they have also diversified into machines small enough for private domestic use.

Unlike most other mower brands, AS-Motor still controls almost all the product lifecycle of its mowers from design and manufacture through to aftercare. They're also known as keen innovators of new technology - a recent new offering is a ride-on mower with a remote-control option (the 940 Sherpa RC).
