Greenhouse Maintenance
If you are the proud owner of a greenhouse and want to ensure it lasts long into the future, take a look at our handy tips below for keeping it in top condition. We sell a range of greenhouse spares and garden spare parts, to help.
The Annual Deep Clean
This is an essential part of your greenhouse maintenance. It is probably best carried out in the autumn, before the weather is too chilly for plants to be outside. Take care also to choose a day that is not too windy, so plants are not damaged.
First, everything needs to be emptied out of the greenhouse, from plant labels, to seeds, trays, pots and spare parts. Next you will need to ensure every part of the greenhouse is scrubbed clean, inside and out. Windows need to be spotless, with all general dirt scraped out from around window panes and in crevices. This will maximise light for your plants over the winter months. All surfaces should be wiped down and paths, floors and any bricks hosed down with a mixture of disinfectant and water to ensure the greenhouse is pest free. Don't forget to also clear out gutters and drains too. Finally, before moving everything back inside, all containers, pots and greenhouse spares should be treated to a thorough wash to eliminate any bugs.
The Damage Check
You should regularly inspect your greenhouse for damage, including the frame, glass and all nuts and bolts. This is a particularly important pre-winter job, as any broken or cracked glass will let the cold in, which could be detrimental for your plants. Use greenhouse glass clips when checking or replacing glass panels and replace any nuts and bolts which are rusted or missing. A good quality wood preserve should be used on wooden frames to keep them healthy and solid. Take care not to splash any on plants however.
Controlling Humidity
It is important to keep a check on the humidity and temperature inside your greenhouse. By doing so you can ensure your vegetables and fruit are in the best growing environment possible, as well as protect wooden frames from rot or other damage. When the sun is at its strongest in the summer, consider placing some shading material over the very highest windows to weaken the harsh light.
Ventilation
Keeping your greenhouse well ventilated is vital. Too much moisture can lead to rot and fast temperature rises can damage plants. Open doors and windows often or install louvre vents or automatic vent arms for your ease. For plants which require a greater level of humidity, use a mister to introduce additional water into the air.
